NEW YEAR’S EVE DINNER OR 年(Nián)夜(Yè)饭(Fàn)

The New Year’s Eve dinner includes a collection of food from different regions and ethnic groups in China. The northern region dishes are primarily dumplings and noodles, while the southern region generally features rice-based dishes and soups. Traditional holiday dishes which are common to both regional styles feature whole chicken, duck, or fish, in addition to pork shoulders and seafood platters.

It used to be that the New Year’s Eve dinner marked the time of year when families in China would enjoy more extravagant food. As the quality of life has improved over the last few decades, though, those extravagant meals have become more affordable, this has diminished the occasion of the New Year’s Eve dinner a bit, and the distinct regional styles of dinners have also become less so due to the population migration. However, the traditional dinner continues to hold an important place in customary holiday celebrations, even as the holiday becomes less centered on an abundance of food and more so on seeing friends and family from all over. A popular sentiment among the younger generations is that the New Year is really about who you decide to spend it with, rather than what you’ll be eating.

For this upcoming Lunar New Year, Chinese Street Market has put together traditional dishes from both northern and southern regions. We have strived to ensure that each dish offers three things: historical and cultural significance, easy storage, and easy preparation. We hope that these dishes allow you to enjoy a cultural experience at home with your family and friends.
